MY PASSION are Laurence René (Vocals, Guitar), Jonathan Gaskin (Drums, Vocals, Electronics), John Be (Guitar) and Simon Rowlands (Bass, Synth), four young men with a fearless, rebellious intention, DIY ethics and a genre-smashing electronic induced metallic punk sound. My Passion’s story has only just begun yet there is enough to write a gripping tale of adventure and immortality here… Two years since their creation and My Passion’s world has consisted of endless touring and self promotion.
The story started in the unlikely leafy Herts suburbs of London back in 2006, Childhood friends with a shared vision and determination, Intent on creating a huge sound and the theatre to match that hit the audience hard and either had you screaming for more or just running in fear. The band gained adoration in pockets of the UK and word quickly spread as they took their energetic show on the road racking up 400 shows at the last count! Street teams from the UK to Australia started up in new towns and cities the band visited, as well as those who discovered My Passion online via their Myspace page run by the band themselves with over 65,000 friends and plays spiraling above a million. As people began to whisper My Passion’s name interest/ curiosity spread and despite overtures from some of the cooler labels out there (and one unnamed soulless Major), My Passion decided to pursue world domination on their own terms with the launch of their label, ‘Style Suicide Records’.
Several successful releases followed. Tomorrow Girls, recorded with Mark Williams (Enter Shikari, The Killers) sold out of its limited 2000 pressing within the first few months of touring. A host of producers lined up to work with the band from Chris Kimsey (The Rolling Stones), Dave Allen (The Cure & previous My Passion Demos) & Jason Wilcox (Fightstar) who the band recorded a download single “BooMan” which hit the top of the Indie store charts! The band then met John Mitchell (Enter Shikari, You Me At Six, Funeral For a Friend) at one of their headline shows having traveled half way across the country to see the band. My Passion hooked up with John for their summer single “Day Of The Bees” a boundary breaking release sold with their my passion fashion merchandise (the minature cd becoming the tshirts label). Falling in love with the production and the chemistry between the band and producer Mitchell they went on to record their debut album at Outhouse studio last autumn. In their hideout in Reading John & the band worked for a month capturing a collection of killer tracks entitled “Corporate Flesh Party” which will be released to the world May 2009.
By the end of 2007 My Passion’s raising profile led to them being asked personally via a Myspace message (where else?) by the US pop scene cult celebrity Jeffree Star to support him on his debut sold out UK tour. Not content with playing the hundreds of live dates in the past two years, they also launched their own club night “Style Suicide Club”, a magnet for the disaffected youth and suburban misfits. It was NME’s Club of the week after just one outing. More support slots followed with, Robots In Disguise, Late Of The Pier, childhood favorites The Faint & most recently main support to The Automatic for Emma Scott as Kerrang! Radio favorites! The band won the Red Bull Bedroom Jam in March 08 and received a slot on the Red Bull stage at the Camden Crawl alongside acts such as Hadouken. They also hit The Offset Festival with acts like Fightstar, and blew away the crowd who witnessed them at the Underage Festival in Victoria Park ending in a stampede to reach the band backstage.
My Passion recently completed a 36 date tour of Europe and the UK taking in 11 different countries with US cult band Kill Hannah where blood boiled as bodies bounced and dancefloors shook. Then their tourbus exploded in the scenic Swiss Alps burning everything they owned apart from instruments… the band walked free from the inferno, caught their breath and jumped aboard a new bus, continuing their explosive run of dates… cheating death and anyone who doubted they could come out on top. My Passion are flying into 2009 at full speed with the momentum the band have built over the last year! With an unstoppable horde of fans that have just propelled the band to a top 3 spot in the Kerrang best of 2008 Readers Poll and a Number one spot in Rocksound magazine! Also introduced in Big Cheese Magazine as ones to watch in 2009, a double page spread tipping My Passion as emerging stars in Fashion Music Publication Disorder and the cover shot along with a 4 page interview this Xmas for newly launched Addition magazine alongside Rolo Tomassi, Enter Shikari & more.
The huge response on the Kill Hannah tour has led to My Passion being chosen as support to Innerpartysystem & Middleclass Rut when they hit the UK in January 2009. Alongside their own record label, tour booking, club nights and ferocious tour schedule, My Passion have been busy developing their own merchandising brand “My Passion Fashion”, a hugely successful range which has been stocked by some of the trendiest alternative shops in London town and has sold in the thousands online and at sold out shows all around Europe.
2008 also saw some huge brands jumping to endorse and support a band doing everything for themselves including Hughes & Kettner, New Era (including a recent photoshoot for the catalogue for 2009), Hartke, Red Bull, Stagg, Cort guitars (catalogue feature) and Fish hair products in Soho. The huge popularity of the music, merchandise and My Passion’s determination to work till they drop has meant they have been able to fund tours and gain a rabidly addicted fan base without a label or any backing, through their own hard work built upon the key ingredient that gave the band their name, (my) Passion. The music may not scream punk in a traditional sense but all the rebellious intentions and an attitude to follow their own path, driven by pure desire and the thrill of scaring, shocking and exciting those who see and hear it will soon make My Passion one of those unconventional success stories that arise once in a generation to win the hearts of millions.
