Formed in late 2013, LIONAL, are an indie/noir pop band from Inverness, Scotland who in 2014 were dubbed the best unsigned band in the country.
Lional’s sound draws influence from the melancholic aspect of post- punk bands The Smiths and Joy Division though the band are often compared to more modern acts such as Interpol, Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand. The bands debut EP ‘My Design’ received nationwide critical acclaim with airplay on Vic Galloway’s BBC Radio Scotland show, MFR and Jim Gellatly’s XFM radio show.
IAIN MCLAUGHLIN & THE OUTSIDERS
Shaking preconceptions and setting out a glorious statement of intent come the aptly named Outsiders spearheading a burgeoning musical scene in the UK’s most northerly city, Inverness.
Iain McLaughlin has lived in Inverness most of his life and in recent years has established himself as an integral and dynamic part of the city’s musical environment as a performer, producer and owner of independent label IMOUT Records but is perhaps best known for his role fronting The Outsiders.
It’s the live environment where the band’s reputation has been earned. Delivering layer upon layer of sound and melody, infused with a darker, dirtier aesthetic. At the core, a sense of unabashed honesty that defines them not only as a group, but as individuals. It’s a sound that also draws on the big skies and wide horizons of the North of Scotland, music that could only come from where it was made.
THE LITTLE MILL OF HAPPINESS
Featuring members of such Highland luminaries as Shutter, Low Tide Revelry, Stetsonhead and The Lush Rollers, The Little Mill Of Happiness formed outside Inverness music hotspot Market Bar due to their shared mutual appreciation of Pavement, Tom Waits, The Replacements and Dinosaur Jr – although their influences bring in the poetry of Philip Larkin and Charles Bukowski to the literature of Kurt Vonnegut and J.G Ballard.
They burst onto the scene with their debut EP “Capsized Sailors” in 2011, and quickly developed a reputation as one of the standout bands to grace the Highland capital. With three pulverising guitars creating a constant wall of menacing sound as a backdrop for vocalist Steve Obern’s growling observations on the world, the band became known for a uniquely intense live experience.
Now, after a mere five years of waiting – during which time they have played across the spectrum of Scottish venues and festivals, and have opened for acts as diverse as Aidan Moffat, British Sea Power, and Pelican (while always leaving time every Thursday to get together and jam in a shed) – The Little Mill Of Happiness have honed their sound to vicious perfection.
Kris Douglas is a seasoned performer whose artistry represents ‘music from the soul’. Former frontman for popular Folk/RocknRoll festival stalwarts The Whiskys, his creativity has carved itself a new niche under the moniker ‘Dr Wook’.
A natural solo singer-songwriter, he encompass a raw, passionate style, drawing on the personal and universal to hit home with emotional and uplifting songs.
Dr Wook released his lo-fi debut record “Never Behind” in 2013 and followed it up with 2016’s critically acclaimed “Streetcrawler EP” on Inverness based label IMOUT Records.
Often described as an ‘artists’ artist’, his authenticity has led to selection for prestigious support slots to performers such as Ben Ottewell of Gomez and The Bluetones Mark Morriss, as well as collaborations with Iain McLaughlin & The Outsiders and composer Colin Fraser and numerous festival appearances.
The Strives are a Scottish three piece Alternative/Indie band. Combining powerful, in your face, guitar and bass riffs alongside thunderous drumming they bring a raw and loud sound to Scottish music scene.
They are currently in the studio recording an their first EP on the IMOUT Records label . With a dynamic and explosive live presence, they are not a band to be missed.
Robin Abbot has been a mainstay of the Inverness music scene for over 20 years.
